Remember When Tattoos …

I remember them days when a tattoo on your skin had a meaning. Only the most respected and craziest vatos you would ever meet in your lifetime had tattoos from their feet to the top of their head, literally. Some of the cleanest artwork you have ever seen. At times i would think the most talented people seem to be behind bars for some reason.Tattoos of skulls, charras, and the names of their barrios inked deep forever and earned through putting in work or being locked down in the pinta. These were the same homies who told me not to get sleeved down because of how hard it was to get a job These were the very same homies who lived in the poorest neighborhoods across America and didn’t have a fuckin dime to their name because who was gonna hire them? The judge or parole officer didn’t wanna hear that shit. Back to the pen with ya!

Fast forward 20 years. Hipsters and redheaded dudes named Barry in horn-rimmed glasses riding 10 speeds have more tattoos than my homies that just got out. The kid that just bagged my groceries had a tattoo behind his ear and about 6 different color Northern Cali Stars up his arm. What the fuck just happened here!

I’d like to go to a shop but who the fuck can afford it. Now only the wealthiest seem to have the best artwork now. Some shops can run upwards of 100$ and hour for good artwork and ink. I remember just sitting in the garage or the hotel room and watching a homie get the ink and needle ready and then viewing the sickest fuckin artwork you’d ever see. If a homie would have tried to charge you $400 for that shit he would have gotten fucked up. Now most jobs hire regardless of tattoos or not. I have quite a few friends who work in corporate offices with tattoos on their forearm area and behind their ears. Its just plain and simple, the barrio lifestyle many of us have come to know over many generations has gone mainstreme. Unless you’re not really a cholo/mexican its ok to have these sorts of things on you and society accepts it. It’s no longer unusual to see a non catholic with a virgin mary and spider web tattoos on a young white kid from suburbia.

Speedy Loc autograph Signing back in 2000 or so. Sunnyvale ,Ca. This was when we would roll to Barrios throughout Northern Cali and get love. It was a great movement to be involved in. We have over 10 different barrios in this flik and not one fight. We all used to fight eachother, now we ride with eachother. Speedy Loc was a solid homie. He helped start a lot of careers in his time, and after. Wether he personally helped you, or inspired you through his music, Speedy Loc did a lot for his people. Much love and Rest in Peace to a great man. Speedy Loc de Decoto Califaz.
